The Heyward decision
So a couple days have passed since Jason Heyward has decided to leave Cardinal Nation for gasp! The Windy City. I am not going to lie, I wanted Heyward back in St. Louis, but at a reasonable price. Supposedly the Cardinals actually oiffered a 200 million dollar deal but Heyward opted to sign in Chicago instead. If that is true then I am glad he is headed north to where World Series dreams go to die. He is a nice player, but there is no way a player with 13-15 home runs and 70 rbi is worth that kind of money I don't care how many Gold Gloves he wins. Fans are losing their minds because someone actually said no to the Cardinals but I don't know why. Listen, I dislike the Cubs as much as the next guy but let's be reasonable here. Have you seen their lineup? Have you seen their average age? And lord knows if the Cubs actually did win a World Series the players involved would own that town. So where do the Cardinals go from here? One name thrown out there is Carlos Gonzalez from the Rockies. I personally like him a lot and he is signed for reasonable money for the next couple years. As long as it wouldn't cost a ridiculous package of players then I say at least kick the tires and see what it would take to make the deal. I am not comfortable going into the season with an aging Holliday, and three players that have had some bumps and bruises in Piscotty, Grichuk, and Moss. They may do fine but our pitching is not getting any younger, neither is Molina and Perralta so it's time to go to plan B. I would rather watch grass grow than listen to John Mozeilak talk, talk about monotone. But I will give the man credit, he has gotten results that is for sure. So Cardinal Nation calm down, the Cubs just saved you from a 200 million dollar disappointment. Spring training is two months away, as Aaron Rogers once said R-E-L-A-X.
Charlie Hustle denied again
News came today that MLB commisioner denied Pete Rose's reinstatement into baseball and therefore denying him the opportunity to make it in the Hall of Fame once again. I grew up a huge Pete Rose fan so I am not exactly objectionable regarding this subject. But I am sorry I just do not get it. Did Pete Rose do something that is considered to be a terrible infraction in baseball? Yes he did. But are you kidding me? There are scum bags like Ty Cobb in the Hall and nobody thinks twice about it. Cobb was not a nice person, he was a terrible person. But there he is in the Hall in all his glory. Yet there are few people that have been better ambassadors of baseball than Charlie Hustle yet he is banished for life with no chance for reinstatement? I can still see Pete Rose at Fenway Park at the All Star Game a while back being paraded around by MLB. Boy they sure don't mind using his likeness but put the man in the Hall? No chance. It is a shame, this country prides itself on second chances, and baseball loves to refer to itself as Americas Past Time, yet they insist on turning their backs on Pete. I find it ridiculous.
Could Thursday be the Rams last hurrah in St. Louis?
I love the NFL. I have been a fan of every level of football there is since I was a little kick watching The Steel Curtain beat up on the Cowboys. As a kid I wanted desperately to go watch the Cardinals play in St. Louis but my Dad was not really sports fan. So after the Cardinals left I was still a football fan but without a team to go watch in person. So when the Rams made the move to St. Louis I was one of the happiest people around. I attended games, I attended training camps. I loved and supported the team even through the worst times, the times of Lawrence Phillips, Tony Banks, Trung Canidate, etc. And now I am forced to realize that my worst nightmare may be happening again. I know that as in the late 80's with the Cardinals there are fans that say "Let 'em leave if they don't want to be here"! Well you won't here that from me. Does the product on the field stink at times? Yes of course it does. But I also realize that if this team up and leaves there is a good chance my kids won't have a home team to take their kids to see and that would be a real shame. I would love to see Stan Kroenke sell the team to an individual that would keep the team here but that is highly unlikely. At this point it seems our best hope is that the league blocks the move. But even then how do we trust this man? He hasn't spoken publicly since Jeff Fisher was hired. That is sad. Jerry Jones talks publicly daily, but our guy can't give us the time of day? And to think he is a Missouri native. I have thought long and hard about going to the game Thursday but I am conflicted. One half of me wants to go see the home team in what may be it's last game in St. Louis. But the other part of me prefers to remember all the games when we had the Greatest Show on Earth and the Dome was rocking. To see the stadium over half empty and hear fans boo is not what I want to remember. I hope and pray that there is a resolution that keeps the Rams in St. Louis but if not I guess it is time to dig out my old Derrick Thomas jersey.
